Take a minute to think about your skincare routine. Seriously, stop and think about it for a second. What does it look like? Probably removing your makeup and washing your face with soap or a fancy face wash and finishing with a moisturizer. Maybe you throw a face mask or microderm in there from time to time. Now be honest, how is that working for you? I’m going to get very personal and share with you my skin care journey, and yes there will be pictures of my not great skin.
I’ve always know that I should wash my face, you’re taught that from the time that you’re about 10 on. I’m admitting to all of you that I have never been good at washing my face. I honestly suck at it. Yes some of it is because I’m lazy, but there’s more to the story. I have never been able to find a product that I have loved. Soap always left my face either extremely dry, or it felt like there was a film on my skin. Medicated face wash would be amazing for about a month or two, then my skin was on fire all of the time. Now when I say it was on fire, I mean I was putting cold washcloths on my face constantly to try and help alleviate the pain. Obviously I stopped using that. Frustration was all I felt. My skin is oily but dry in some places (thanks mountain/desert air of Utah), and I don’t have horrible acne, I have more than I would like. Like most people I turned to the internet to try and find a solution, and Pinterest introduced me to a new idea. Oil cleansing.
So I wish that I could say that I have been oil cleansing for 4 years (that’s how long it’s been since I first read about it!), but alas I cannot. I was really contemplating trying it, but I was nervous because oil must be bad for your skin, right? So I did the natural thing which is talk to some friends about it. Big mistake. There was a guy around and he overheard me talking about it and he started laughing. He told me soap and water (or even better, just water) would be the best way to go. It freaked me out so much that I didn’t move forward with it. I knew I shouldn’t listen to him, water would never really clean my face effectively when I had been wearing makeup all day. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, when I had all but forgotten about this crazy idea of putting oil on my face to clean it.
I have been taking a makeup class because, well, you can’t ever be too knowledgeable when it comes to makeup. One of the things that we have gone over is skincare, and I was introduced to Crude which is an oil cleansing skin care. When I was listening to the founder of the company explain why oil cleansing works, and why it’s actually good for the skin. Essentially soap strips all oils from your skin, including the oils you naturally produce to protect your skin, and this causes the skin to be inflamed. Oil cleansing works with the natural oils on your skin to break down makeup, built up oils that clog pores, and bacteria and washes it away. You also can use the same oil as a moisturizer! After just a short amount of time using it, my skin already feels amazing!
Now you might think I’m crazy, and I get it. But these testimonials don’t lie. My skin won’t lie to you either, I would never promote a product that I 1000% did not believe in. What makes me happy is knowing that they have a few different oils to help take care of specific skin needs. Everything Oil is great for everyone, Bloom works for those who have a lot of healing (acne scars, sun spots, etc), and Scruff is great for beards and those who have really dry skin. They also make a detox mask, and they sell microfiber cloths!
If you’re nervous and you don’t fully believe me, but I’ve almost talked you into trying it, I issue you a challenge. Purchase the starter kit (1 oz bottle of Everything Oil, 1 oz Detox Mask, and 3 Microfiber cloths) and give it a genuine try. You have to give any new skincare regime 3 weeks of using it, and not using anything else during that time.
