The 6 Best Vitamins for Healthy Hair

October 5, 2020 by Haley 21 Comments

Do you take hair vitamins? Have I already lost you? It’s true! There are vitamins that work wonders for hair. I’m going to tell you about the top hair vitamins.

Anyone who knows me knows that I have some major hair woes.  I am pretty sure that my  pregnancies have something to do with this.  Every time I have a baby, I lose (seems like) half of my hair volume.  And if you times that by four babies, I am super bald.  Not really, but I have these obnoxious baby hairs all over my head and they are really difficult to tame.  So, I have searched high and low for a good vitamin supplement to take to help speed the growing process, all the while strengthening my hair as well.  Here is what all my extensive internet Googling and experimenting with different products have found:

Top Hair Vitamins

Biotin

This is known as THE hair vitamin to use.  Every supplement or vitamin that claims to be for hair growth or strength has a large amount of Biotin in it.  Biotin is a B vitamin that is referred to as vitamin B7.  It is found in any B-complex vitamin supplement.  B vitamins also help promote healthy skin, eyes, liver and nerves.

Biotin is found in meat, saltwater fish, egg yolks, milk, poultry, grains and yeast.  Biotin is also an important part of your metabolism and energy production, so it is important to get enough of this vitamin. Image from Amazon.

6 Best Vitamins for Healthy Hair

Vitamin E

This is usually known for helping your skin be healthy and stretchy:)  It can also help prevent stretch marks or lessen the effects of aging.  Because Vitamin E increases the circulation to the scalp, it can also help in hair growth and even reverse hair loss, to a point.  Pretty neat stuff. Vitamin A

Because Vitamin A is essential for a healthy immune system, it also helps with healthier nails and hair.  If your immune system is working properly, you will have a healthier body and each system will work to the best of their function.  If you look at all those gimmicky hair growth pills, you will see a large percentage of Vitamin A in all of them. Vitamin C

Also helps with blood circulation, therefore helps with the scalp and follicles which can speed up the hair growth.  You can take a Vitamin C supplement, or eat a lot of oranges, berries or leafy greens. Image from Amazon.

Zinc

This is another vitamin that really helps with the overall health of your hair. Heavy exercisers or sweaters tend to lose great amounts of zinc, so if you fit into that category you may want to consider taking some zinc supplements. Image from Amazon.

Iron

Even though this isn’t a vitamin, it’s a mineral that is really important to help your body function correctly…this includes helping with healthy hair! Image from Amazon.

Specific Supplements that are worth a try:

I have been on every prenatal vitamin out there, and guess what?!  They work.  My hair is stronger, longer and my nails are too.  Definitely worth the hype.  Be sure to take them on a full stomach or you may have to pull over and vomit in a check cashing store’s parking lot.  Been there, done that. 🙂

The 6 Best Vitamins for Healthy Hair

Hair, Skin and Nails caplets that Costco sells- also tried them.  I was only taking them a few weeks before I could tell a really big difference in my skin and nails.  My hair was also growing and I felt like it was stronger.

Don’t forget sufficient protein and minerals. VERY IMPORTANT. My hair is to my knees and definitely know that a good diet is the key to great hair. You can always tell how a person eats by their hair and skin.

      What is your start length?
What protien & mineral got your hair to your knees?
Does that length run in your family or did you grow it that long?
      What is your routine?
      Do tell.

These are definitely good vitamins! Thought vitamin c was mainly for the immune system but it’s good to know it’ll help hair grow too. I’d recommend hair formula 37 too, because they have the protein deborah mentioned and seemed to work for me!

My Physician said that you should not take prenatal vitamins if you’re not pregnant. It may be ok to crush them into your shampoo or conditioner.

Everything that I have read about folic acid has stated that the jury is still out on whether it helps with hair growth or not. I personally think the misconception comes from the fact that a b9 (the naturally occurring folic acid) deficiency can lead to hair loss. I’m not going to say not to take it, but I’m just not completely convinced it truly helps. Then again, I’m not a doctor

I take 10,000 mcg of Biotin every day. My hairdresser tells me that my hair grows an inch every 4-6 weeks. I never miss taking it . My Mother’s hair was thin and she suggested Biotin so mine would not be thin also. It works. Thank you Biotin.
